The Sierra Estrella Energy Storage project is ideally located on roughly 11 acres of land in Avondale, Arizona, where it will interconnect adjacent to the 230kV bus of the Rudd substation, an existing critical exchange on the grid. The project will hold up to 250 MW / 1,000 MWh of battery energy capacity, supporting grid reliability and allowing the integration of low-cost, readily available renewable energy into the local electrical system for Salt River Project. Construction of the Sierra Estella facility started in the summer of 2023.
The summer 2024 completion of the Sierra Estrella facility will contribute to energy reliability, supporting the Salt River Project’s renewable energy and clean energy jobs goals, while providing valuable local community benefits. Situated in a disused portion of an operating dairy plant and directly adjacent to the substation, the Sierra Estrella Energy Storage project site is an optimal location for new energy infrastructure.
